The Village of Orland Park will host a number of programs on April 25th to give residents, businesses and visitors the information they need to help preserve the world around them.

“In celebration of Earth Day, Orland Park has chosen to offer events and programs that will help everyone in the region,” said Orland Park Mayor Dan McLaughlin. “We invite everyone to join us in learning new ways to sustain the environment while having a great time.”

Events include the village’s Smart Living Fair which offers demonstrations, kid-friendly crafts and activities, Smart Living tips, and recycling services. The fair will be held at the Village Recreation Administration building at 14600 Ravinia Avenue, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Attendees are asked to bring their old crayons to be recycled as well as any shoes that are no longer in use. Paper shredding services will be provided on-site by Proshred Security.

Residents are invited to bring their small electronics to be disposed of in a safe and environmentally friendly manner for no cost. The United Cerebral Palsy Foundation will collect all forms of computer electronics – working or not. This includes CPU, monitors, cables, cords, printers, software, stereo items, DVD/VCR, keyboards, mice etc. No televisions will be accepted. UCP will also accept durable medical items. These include canes, walkers, commodes, wheelchairs and bath benches.

Paper and small electronics recycling will take place between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

The Orland Park Police Department will be on hand to gather and properly dispose of any unwanted prescription medication as part of their Drug Take-back Program.

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District will offer rain barrel demonstrations and local beekeeper, Belfry Bees, will give information on beekeeping and provide an opportunity to view a live observation hive.

The Clean The Park event will take place at John Humphrey Woods from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Participants are asked to meet at the Civic Center parking lot, located at 14750 Ravinia Avenue. Participants will take part in cleaning up the entire park and ball fields in addition to the wooded areas around the John Humphrey Complex.

Spring Clean-Up
In addition to the events taking place on April 25th, the village is once again offering its annual Spring Clean-Up.

"The village has offered its spring and fall clean-up programs for years, inviting residents to dispose of normal household garbage in the dumpsters that we'd make available," said Mayor Dan McLaughlin.

The village's Curbside Spring Clean-Up replaces the use of dumpsters and allows residents to place items at the curb for convenient pick-up.

“Orland Park has held its Spring Clean-Up around Earth Day for more than twenty years,” McLaughlin said, “We are happy to be able to offer curbside collection once again this year.”

The Village of Orland Park’s Curbside Spring Clean-Up Collection will be held on residents’ regular pick up days the week of April 20, 2015. The Village of Orland Park’s Curbside Spring Clean-Up Collection will be held on residents’ regular pick up days the week of April 20, 2015.

“The events on April 25th are a great way to introduce children and adults to the many benefits of becoming environmentally friendly,” said Trustee Pat Gira, chair of the village’s Parks and Recreation Committee.

“When we talk about the village’s many green programs, I think of my grandchildren and what we’re doing for their generation and those after them,” Gira said.

She added, “The response to the village’s Smart Living Orland Park Program has been wonderful with people asking what they can do, where they can find information and how they can help. We invite everyone to the April 25th events to learn more about what we can all do within our own communities,” she added.

There is no charge for admission to any of the events.
