Village Aquatic Center Earns Third Five Star Safety Audit
Posted on 08/20/2018

The Village of Orland Park Centennial Park Aquatic Center earned its third five-star safety rating of the 2018 season during the most recent risk management audit by StarGuard Elite.

StarGuard Elite awarded the Village of Orland Park's Centennial Park Aquatic Center the highest rating, five stars, following a risk management audit on August 14. StarGuard Elite develops and implements client-based aquatic risk prevention solutions.

"Safety is everyone's number one objective at the Centennial Park Aquatic Center," said Trustee Dan Calandriello, chair of the village's Recreation and Parks Committee. "Having a national safety organization test and then recognize the village's lifeguards shows how very hard this dedicated staff works all summer."

Swimming facilities are tested on an unannounced basis with the auditor hiding outside of the facility, covertly monitoring the lifeguards.

While the guards supervise the pool from their chairs, the auditor evaluates and grades the guards' performances. The auditor studies how often the guards' heads turn, scanning the pool from left, center and right, observes rotation changes and confirms that guards have hydration and shade. Once the audit is completed, the auditor's presence is announced. The auditor then selects guards, team leaders and squad leaders to respond to mock emergency drills.

Aquatic center lifeguards tested during a mock unresponsive patron scenario included Taylor Villa, Conor Murphy, Kai Diaz, Maddy Woods and John Chomiak. Finn Haran performed in the first aid scenario while Taylor Villa participated in an active rescue. Lifeguard Eric Cerva performed individual CPR and Conor Murphy was part of the rescue and response.

CPAC guards covertly observed guarding the water included: Erica Cerva, Jenna Perdue, MaryCate Foley, Mike Marassa and Morgan Meyer. CPAC Guard John Chomiak participated in the dispatch observation. Supervisory staff observed included Jace Kole, Beth Melaniphy, Ronnie Haleem and Lauren Olson.

"We are extremely proud of the Centennial Park Aquatic Center staff," said Orland Park Director of Recreation Nancy Flores. "Their commitment to training and serious focus on their responsibilities ensures a safe environment for all patrons on a daily basis."

The village's Centennial Park Aquatics Center, located at 15600 West Avenue in Orland Park, is on modified back to school hours. The The Aquatic Center is open 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on August 15, 16, 17, 20, 21, 23 & 31. The pool will be closed on August 22, 23, 27, 28, 29 & 30.
