The Orland Park Theatre Troupe is bringing a Broadway classic to the stage at the Carl Sandburg High School Performing Arts Center.

"Bye Bye Birdie" tells the story of a rock and roll singer who is about to be inducted into the army. His manager plans a farewell party at which the star is to kiss one lucky fan good bye on "The Ed Sullivan Show" before he departs to serve his country.

"This is an American classic that won four Tony Awards for best musical, director, choreography and supporting actor," said Executive Producer Irene Buikema. "It's a timeless story that will appeal to all age groups," she added.

Written by Michael Stewart, "Bye Bye Birdie" played on Broadway for 607 performances at the Martin Beck Theatre and 268 performances in London at Her Majesty's Theatre. The music was written by Charles Strouse with lyrics by Lee Adams.

Orland Park Resident Producer/Director Frann Carnivele-Sidlow will produce and direct the show.

"This is a great show for community theater because it calls for all age groups," Carnivele-Sidlow explained.

"We're looking for fifteen adults, twenty teens and ten children between the ages of eight and thirteen," she said.

"This is a fun show with interesting characters and great music --- a show that the cast will enjoy performing and the audience will enjoy watching," Carnivele-Sidlow said.

James Mazeika will serve as co-director for the production with Elissa Metropolous serving as musical director. Jeanne Cacciato is the show's choreographer.

Auditions will be held at Orland Park's Old Village Hall, 14413 South Beacon Avenue, on Sunday, January 18, 2009 from 1:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. and again on Monday, January 19 from 7:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. If needed, call backs will be held on Tuesday, January 20.

Those auditioning must sing sixteen prepared measures of a song, preferably from the show. Potential cast members should dress comfortably for the auditions and be prepared to learn and perform a short dance. Once cast, participants must pay a registration fee.

Rehearsals will be held Sunday afternoons from noon until 4:00 p.m. and Monday and Thursday evenings from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Performances, at the Carl Sandburg High School Performing Arts Center, will be April 24, 25 and 26, 2009.
