The Village of Orland Park utilizes a network of lightning detection monitors to enhance safety at parks, athletic facilities, and outdoor recreation areas. These systems provide real-time alerts when lightning is detected nearby, allowing for timely evacuation and risk reduction.
The Village currently operates 5 lightning detection monitors at the following locations:
Cachey Park
Centennial Park Baseball Fields
Centennial Park Aquatic Center
John Humphrey Complex
Schussler Park
The Village uses the iStrike Lightning Detection System, which relies on a network of ground-based sensors to detect lightning in real time.
Sensors detect electromagnetic signals produced by lightning strikes
Data is processed through software to determine strike location
Triangulation is used to accurately track storm activity
The system automatically triggers alerts when lightning enters a defined safety radius
This combination of hardware sensors and software-driven analysis allows for fast, reliable detection and notification of hazardous conditions.
(John Humphrey Complex, Schussler Park, Cachey Park, Centennial Baseball)
15-mile radius:
Red strobe activates
Early warning only – no evacuation required
10-mile radius:
Siren activates
Evacuation is required
When lightning is detected within the activation radius:
A red strobe light begins flashing
A loud siren sounds (similar to a police-style siren, not a tornado siren)
The system provides a clear, immediate warning to all individuals in the area
If you are near a facility when the system activates:
Immediately stop activities
Move to your vehicle or a safe enclosed space
Remain sheltered until the system indicates it is safe
The Village follows a standard protocol where individuals should stay sheltered until the “all-clear” siren sequence is completed.
