Orland Park, IL (April 7, 2026) – The Orland Park Police Department officially announces the retirement of K-9 Maverick. After more than seven years of dedicated service, Maverick leaves behind a lasting legacy and will be greatly missed by Village staff, elected officials and the community.

Maverick, a 9-year-old Hanoverian Hound, began his service with the Orland Park Police Department in December 2018. During his distinguished career, he was certified in narcotics detection, missing and endangered person investigations and suspect apprehension, playing a vital role in protecting the community.

“K-9 Maverick was an invaluable member of the Orland Park Police Department, whose dedication and service made a lasting impact on our community,” said Chief of Police Eric Rossi. “He will be deeply missed and we wish him a well-earned and happy retirement.”

In early 2025, Maverick experienced significant medical issues, including surgery to relieve a herniated disc in his cervical spine. While the procedure was successful and Maverick passed his annual state certification after the surgery, the physical demands of police work are considerable. With Maverick approaching nine years of age, the decision was made to retire him from active-duty effective April 6, 2026.

The ownership of K-9 Maverick will be transferred from the Village to his handler, Officer Joe Zumerling, for $10, and Maverick will be able to spend his golden years relaxing at home with his family.

The Village of Orland Park extends its sincere gratitude to K-9 Maverick and Officer Zumerling for their unwavering dedication and service. We wish Maverick a long and happy retirement.
